The first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, called "Little Boy", is shown here. Little boy was regarded by President Truman as a "military weapon". The president also went on to say that he never had any doubts that it should be used.
This is a photo of the first atom bomb explosion, in Hiroshima. The bomb took only 43 seconds to explode and demolish the entire city. The aftermath of this bomb included more 80,000 civilians dead and the destruction of 76,000 buildings.
This photograph shows the ground crew of the B-29 'Enola Gay'. This plane, also shown above, dropped the first atom bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 at 8:15 AM.
This picture shows how devastating the atomic bomb was. This particular photo was taken after the second bomb was dropped in Nagasaki, where 100,000 civilians died instantly. Over 200,000 people were affected in other ways as well. Many people died of radiation, which caused cataracts,
leukemia and other cancers, malformed offspring, and premature aging.
The second bomb in Nagasaki destroyed buildings up to a mile away of where the bomb initially landed. Fires also spread across the northern section of the city for up to two miles, and it left those lucky enough to survive displaced from their homes and everything they knew.
Japan's formal surrender, shown here, was on August 15, 1945. Japanese official surrendered to the Allies aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. This day is known throughout history as V-J Day, or Victory in Japan Day.

This video shows the history behind the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was the code name for the American Program to build an Atomic Bomb. This project took place starting in 1941, and was top secret: although thousands of people contributed to the Manhattan Project, only a handful knew what it was really for.
